Lightning Strikes Roof in Beaver Dam
11/1/2023 (Permalink)
This Beaver Dam home started on fire when a lightning bolt struck the peak of the house. Firefighters extinguished the fire and SERVPRO of Madison, WI was called to handle the fire and water mitigation. Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.
Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
Our trained professionals carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.
Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service
Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.
Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)
The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.
Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces
We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.
Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing
We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
Step 7: Restoration
Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Causes of Sub Pump Failure
10/1/2023 (Permalink)
Power Failure
Your primary sump pump should not be treated any different than any other appliance in your home - without power, it is completely worthless. As a safeguard, invest in a high quality battery back-up sump pump. A battery kept continually charged by the backup system operates a separate pump linked to the discharge pipe, providing you hours of protection until power is restored. Some backup pumps even monitor the condition of the battery and alert you when it needs to be replaced.
Frozen Discharge Pipe
If the discharge pipe is not installed pitched properly, water will collect and eventually freeze, causing a blockage.
Switch Stuck in Place
There are several different types of sump float switches. Vertical and tethered floats are the most common. Vertical floats seem to work the best as tethered floats are known for getting stuck on the side walls of the sump pit (resulting in a flooded basement).
Over-worked / Under-Powered Sump Pump
Not all pumps are created equal. Make sure you install the correct horsepower pump capable of keeping up with your flow of water.
Old Age
It is generally recommended that sump pumps should be replaced every five to seven years in order to be reasonably safe. Don’t wait until it’s too late!

What are the differences between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning?
3/15/2022 (Permalink)
What Is the Difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning?
- A tornado watch means tornadoes are possible in the area. You should review your emergency plan, check supplies and be ready to act quickly if a tornado does approach.
- A tornado warning means a tornado has been visually sighted or indicated by weather radar and you should act immediately. Be sure to have a battery-powered weather radio available to monitor potential tornado activity.
What Are the Signs of a Tornado?
Some of the potential indicators of tornadoes may include:
- A strong, persistent rotation in the cloud base and/or whirling dust or debris on the ground under a cloud base.
- Hail or heavy rain followed by either a dead calm or a fast, intense wind shift.
- A loud continuous roar or rumble that does not fade in a few seconds, like thunder does.
What Should I Do if I Learn a Tornado Is Approaching?
- If you are in a house, go to the lowest level, such as a basement or a storm cellar.
- If there is no basement, go to an interior room such as a closet, hallway or bathroom.
- Try to cover your head with a blanket or jacket to guard against flying debris or broken glass. If you are in a mobile home, you should leave immediately and seek shelter elsewhere.
- If you are outside and cannot get to shelter, crouch beside a strong structure or lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area and try to cover your head and neck.
- Get as far away from trees and cars as you can.
What if I Am in a Car and I Learn a Tornado Is Approaching?
- Try to locate a sturdy building in which you can immediately seek shelter. If that isn’t possible, you have two options:
- Stay in the car with the seat belt on, putting your head down below the windows and covering it with your hands and a blanket if you have one.
- If you can safely get lower than the level of the roadway, exit your car and lie in that area, covering your head with your hands.
What Are Some of the Common Misconceptions about Tornadoes?
- One misconception is that opening a window in your house will “equalize the pressure” created by the tornado. Do not open any windows; doing so may actually pressurize the house and cause the roof to be torn off.
- Tornadoes are not always visible from a distance. Rely on a weather radio for the latest information.
- Although tornadoes are usually spawned by thunderstorms, they have been known to occur without lightning. They can cross a river or another body of water.
- Tornadoes are not confined to “tornado alley,” a region of the Midwestern U.S. where tornadoes are most frequent. Tornadoes can occur anywhere, any time.

Tips to prevent frozen pipes
11/3/2021 (Permalink)
Cold temperatures are inevitable in Wisconsin. When freezing temperatures hit, here are some helpful prevention tips:
- When you know temperatures will be dipping below freezing, allow water to run in all the sinks at a slow, constant drip. It only needs to trickle, and that tiny amount of water will keep the water moving through the pipes and prevent them from freezing.
- Open up the cabinet doors in the bathrooms and kitchen. This will allow the heat from the home to circulate and warm up the pipes.
- Keep the garage door closed to keep garage pipes from freezing.
- Keep your house at a warm, consistent temperature both day and night.
- If you leave your home for extended periods of time, do not set your thermostat lower than 55 degrees.
- If you do end up with frozen pipes, a hand-held hair dryer or heat lamp can thaw them.

Causes of Sub Pump Failure
5/27/2021 (Permalink)

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

Causes of Sump Pump Failure
3/20/2020 (Permalink)

Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes
3/3/2020 (Permalink)

Taking precautions to prevent water damage during construction
9/26/2019 (Permalink)
As a new business owner, the last thing you want is water damage during the construction of your business. However, it can happen if the proper procedures are not followed. This article from "The Hartford Insurance" explains what can happen:
Common causes of water damage during construction include:
• Improper installation of weatherproofing, waterproofing and moisture barrier systems on the exterior skin of a building
• Poorly glued connections on plastic pipes or improperly sweated copper pipe connections
Supervisors should ensure that all weatherproofing/ waterproofing installations adhere to the building plans, manufacturers’ specifications, industry standards, and all relevant building codes. The WDPP (Water Damage Protection Plan) should include a quality control plan for plumbing connections and fittings such as marking each connection with a permanent marker. The plan should also include the fire sprinkler system. Worksite inspections should verify that:
• Water accumulations from rain and groundwater are not migrating into the building
• All door and window openings are covered at the end of each work shift and prior to inclement weather
• Water lines and mechanical equipment are protected from freezing
• Sprinkler or plumbing lines that are pressure tested with water are drained immediately following the test
• Standpipe valves are closed
• Roof drains are not blocked with leaves or debris
• Sink drains are not clogged
• Storage areas are dry and well ventilated
• Materials are raised off the floor by pallets for storage Controls
The WDPP (Water Detection Protection Plan) often outlines preventative measures to minimize the risk of water damage such as an administrative policy to shut off the domestic water supply during off-hours. Supervisory personnel should verify that no trades will be working during off-hours before shutting off the water supply. In addition, they must ensure that the domestic water line doesn’t provide water to any operating mechanical system that requires a constant water source. Other preventative procedures include:
• Providing a secondary power source (i.e. generator) when using sump pumps or other water pumping systems
• Testing sprinkler and plumbing systems with air pressure to identify system leaks before charging with water
• Sealing leading edges of roofing materials at the end of each day to prevent storm water from getting under an incomplete roofing membrane
• Providing heat during the winter in buildings with charged water lines or standpipes to protect from freezing
• Leaving a gap of at least 1/2” between the drywall and the floor to minimize water contact in the event floors become wet
Many leak detection systems are available to help prevent water damage. Many commercial water flow detection systems are completely non-intrusive (no cutting of pipe to install) and easy to program. Passive leak detectors monitor water flow and sound an alarm (local or connected to a centrally monitored system) when water starts to flow and the system is armed during off hours. Active leak detectors not only generate an alarm, but can also prevent water leaks by automatically shutting off the water supply. The WDPP can list the leak detection systems used on-site, identify supervisory personnel responsible for their use, and refer to the operating guidelines for each system.

Difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning
4/12/2019 (Permalink)

Some Causes of Sump Pump Failure
3/1/2019 (Permalink)

Trust the experts to handle your mold problem
3/1/2019 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Madison North & East will inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

The Classes of Water Damage
2/5/2019 (Permalink)
The Classes of Water Damage Losses are determined by the rate of evaporation based on the type of materials affected by water damage to your property. Determining the Class of Water is an important first step and will determine the amount and type of equipment utilized to restore your business. Here are four IICRC water damage classifications:
Class 1 - Slow Evaporation Rate
Water losses that affect only part of a room or area, or losses with lower permeance/porosity materials (e.g., plywood, particle board, structural wood, vinyl composition tile or VCT, concrete). Little or no wet carpet or cushion is present. Minimum moisture is absorbed by materials, releasing moisture slowly.
Class 2 - Fast Evaporation Rate
Water losses that affect an entire room or carpet and cushion. Water has wicked up walls 12" - 24". There is moisture remaining in structural materials (e.g., plywood, particle board, structural wood, concrete).
Class 3 - Fastest Evaporation Rate
Water may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion and sub-floor in the entire area are saturated.
Class 4 - Specialty Drying Situations
These consist of wet materials with very low permeance/porosity (hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, stone, and crawlspace). Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which requires very low specific humidity.

Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes
1/18/2019 (Permalink)

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, “SERVPRO of Madison North & East”will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

- Have a lightning safety plan and cancel/postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are expected.
- If you do get caught outside, avoid high ground, open spaces and all metal objects including electric wires, fences, etc. Seek shelter in a substantial building or fully enclosed metal vehicle.
- If you are indoors, stay away from doors and windows. Do not use the telephone. Consider unplugging computers, power tools & TV sets. Lightning may strike exterior electric/phone lines, inducing shocks to inside equipment.

Common Causes for Sub Pump Failure
3/1/2018 (Permalink)

Tips for Preventing Frozen Pipes When Cold Hits
1/3/2018 (Permalink)
Cold temperatures are inevitable here in Madison, Wisconsin. When the freezing temperatures hit, here are some helpful prevention tips:
- When you know temperatures will be dipping below freezing, allow water to run in all the sinks at a slow, constant drip. It only needs to trickle, and that tiny amount of water will keep the water moving through the pipes and prevent them from freezing.
- Open up the cabinet doors in the bathrooms and kitchen. This will allow the heat from the home to circulate and warm up the pipes.
- Keep the garage door closed to keep garage pipes from freezing.
- Keep your house at a warm, consistent temperature both day and night.
- If you leave your home for extended periods of time, do not set your thermostat lower than 55 decrees.
- If you do end up with frozen pipes, a hand-held hair dryer or heat lamp can thaw them.

The Four Classes of Water Damage
8/21/2017 (Permalink)
4 Classes of Water Damage
Classes of Water Damage losses are determined by the rate of evaporation based on the type of materials affected by water damage to your property. Determining the Class of Water is an important first step, and will determine the amount and type of equipment utilized to restore your business. There are four IICRC water damage classifications, they are as follows:

Safely Enjoying your Summer
8/8/2017 (Permalink)
There are many great things that come along with the great thrill of summer like swimming, many outdoor activities, but most importantly cook outs and campfires. Using the grill and campfires are huge instigators for house fires. Here are some safety tips on preventing this...
Grilling Safety Tips:
- Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outside.
- The grill should be placed several feet away from the home, deck railings and out from under leaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep caution of children and pets around the grilling area.
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
- Always make sure your gas grill's lid is open before lighting it.
For charcoal grills...
- There are many ways to get charcoal ready for use. Chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
- If using starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add any other flammable liquids to the fire.
- When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.
Campfire Safety tips:
- You should keep your fire 8 to 10 feet away from anything such as your house, chairs, food, etc.
- Have water nearby. Controlling a fire can be just as important as putting it out.
- Safety proof your pit:
- Clear all debris from around the pit like garbage and grass. A 5-foot perimeter of soil around the campfire space is recommended.
- If there isn't a metal ring, circle the pit with rocks or stones. It will help keep the fire in it's borders.
SERVPRO hopes everyone has a great summer! Remember to call SERVPRO at 608-221-1818 if an accident happens.

Have Questions About Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage? Call Today – (608) 221-1818
Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.
We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage.

How often do you clean these areas?

Eliminate mold and mildew indoors by cleaning behind and under appliances
Did you know? The air in your home is 10 times more dirty than the air outside.
During the Spring and Summer months, allergens accumulate and fill areas of your home or office with dust, dust mites, animal dander, mold and other unhealthy elements. Unless you address the situation now, the air quality will continue to deteriorate.
Your friends at SERVPRO of Madison want to ensure that you and your property are properly prepared for the upcoming season. Therefore, we would like to offer you some helpful tips that will adequately prepare your property for the Fall:
- Eliminate mold and mildew indoors by cleaning under the refrigerator, washing and disinfecting garbage cans, scrubbing bathrooms, and cleaning or changing shower curtains
- Remove any wet debris from around the home or office, as mold spores are airborne particles that can easily float indoors
- Schedule to have your chimney cleaned within the next month. Excessive buildup of creosote and debris, as well as miscellaneous branches, leaves and animal nests can create a dangerous situation as it increases the potential to spark a chimney fire.
- Remember not to ignore your ductwork, vents and HVAC systems. Unnecessary dirt and debris can pose a serious threat to the health of your family or employees if they are not properly maintained.

Hail Protection for Your Home
5/9/2017 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Madison strives to put our customers at ease, guiding them and supporting them through the STORM emergency process while providing education and knowledge on how to best navigate the situation.
Hail storms can strike without much warning, leaving you with little time to react. Being prepared in advance — and knowing what to do — can help you stay safe and keep damage to a minimum. Consider signing up for local weather alerts, which deliver warnings when hail storms are approaching your area.
What Is Hail?
Hail is a type of solid precipitation, distinct from, but often confused with sleet. Sleet generally falls in colder temperatures while hail growth is inhibited at very cold temperatures. Hail creation is possible within thunderstorms and is formed when water vapor in updrafts reaches a freezing point. Ice then forms and is suspended in the air by updrafts and falls down to be coated by water again. This process can occur over and over adding many layers to the hailstone. Hailstones can be as small as peas or as large as softballs, and the larger ones can cause injury and serious damage.* The average hailstorm lasts only five minutes, but the damage hailstorms cause totals about $1 billion a year, according to the National Weather Service.
How to Minimize Hail Damage
- Large hail can shatter windows. Closing the drapes, blinds or window shades can help prevent the wind from blowing broken glass into your home or buildings.
- Whenever possible, park your vehicles inside a garage or under a carport.
- Patio and lawn furniture can be dented, broken or even shattered by hail. Move these items indoors or under a covered area when not in use.
- If you have plans to replace the roof covering on your home or business, consider using impact-resistant material if you live in a hail-prone area. For guidance on making the right choices for roof coverings, visit the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety website.

Tornado Safety Tips
5/9/2017 (Permalink)
Every year, all over the country, catastrophic natural disasters wreak havoc on communities large and small.
Whether its a tornado, flooding, or hail damage, the effects of these colossal events can be felt across the nation.
In the midst of the chaos and stress caused by these happenings, it is easy for business and home owners to feel overwhelmed and lost.
“SERVPRO of Madison North & East” strives to put our customers at ease, guiding them and supporting them through the STORM emergency process while providing education and knowledge on how to best navigate the situation.

So in the event that your home or business is involved in a STORM, you can rely on “SERVPRO of Madison North & East” (608) 221-1818 to turn a stressful situation into a manageable, professional experience.
Preventing Commercial Water Damage During Construction of Your New Business
5/9/2017 (Permalink)
Don't let water damage get your business down before opening day
As a new business owner, the last thing you want is water damage during the construction of your business. However, it can happen if the proper procedures are not followed. Remember that “SERVPRO of Madison North & East”is proud to serve our local business owners in Dane, Columbia, Sauk, Richland, Iowa, Grant and Vernon counties when the unexpected happens. This article from The Hartford Insurance explains what can happen:

What to do in case of a fire
5/8/2017 (Permalink)
A fire can be especially devastating to your home or business. SERVPRO of Madison has specialized fire and water damage restoration training and experience to quickly clean up and restore your home to pre-fire condition. Board-ups - In some cases firefighters may break windows and cut holes in the roof in order to vent the fire. It is extremely important to secure openings to your home or structure using sturdy, durable materials designed to protect it from both weather intrusion and intrusion by outsiders.
Types of Fire/Smoke/Soot

Common Causes of Basement Sump Pump Failure
5/8/2017 (Permalink)

What is Black Mold?
5/4/2017 (Permalink)
Stachybotrys chartarum is the type of mold often called “black mold” or “toxic mold”. Sensational news reports warn about the dangers of black mold and these stories can be alarming and confusing. Any mold in your home should be treated with caution – stay out of affected areas and don’t touch or disturb the mold.
How Do I Tell If It’s Black Mold?
Since many types of mold can produce allergens and irritants, you should contact SERVPRO of Madison regardless of the color or type of mold. In many instances, multiple types of mold can exist in the same house or structure. If you suspect that you have a mold problem, contact a SERVPRO of Madison immediately.
If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today (608) 221-1818
Understanding Mold
When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
Sewage Cleanup and Restoration
5/4/2017 (Permalink)
Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.
Sewage Backup or Toilet Overflow? Call SERVPRO of Madison (608) 221-1818
There are three major types of contaminated water. SERVPRO of Madison will inspect that contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your home or business.
The three types of contaminated water:
Category 1: "Clean Water"
This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
- Water from a clean source like a broken water line
- If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3
Category 2: "Gray Water"
This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- May contain bacteria and viruses
- Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated
Category 3: "Black Water"
This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
- May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
- Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Here's Why Professional Water Removal Is More Effective Than DIY Methods

Save Money and Aggravation, Call SERVPRO of Madison for Water Damage Problems
After a water emergency that floods a home or business, the last thing that most people want to deal with is a bill for cleaning up the damage. This is what leads many homeowners to attempt water extraction on their own instead of calling a professional.
If you're in need of water removal in Dane, Columbia, Sauk, Richland, Iowa, Grant or Vernon county, you may be tempted to save money by trying to get rid of the excess water on your own. However, going this route typically has more consequences than benefits and will result in greater losses of time, money, and your possessions in the long run. Here's why calling SERVPRO for professional water removal is a smart move.
Professional water extraction works extremely well.
While some homeowners resort to opening windows and doors, turning on ceiling fans, and blotting towels around the house, SERVPRO has powerful equipment that ensures efficient and thorough water removal. We're also often able to restore documents, books, furnishings, and electronic devices affected by water damage, plus we'll get your home's humidity back to an appropriate level.
Many water emergencies are hazardous.
If your house has been flooded with gray or black water, such as that from a natural disaster, backed up sewer line, or a leaky toilet, expert attention to the problem is best. These types of water are risky for untrained persons to handle because it involves disease causing waste and debris. This is the type of material that can't simply be put out with the week's garbage and needs proper and safe disposal. We're knowledgeable about how to get rid of contaminated waste during water extraction, so there are no lingering health risks to your family or pets.
It's important to consider mold and mildew.
One reason that so many homeowners who attempt DIY water removal eventually end up calling a pro is unseen damage caused by mold and mildew. While your flooring and possessions may look and feel dry, without proper water extraction and controlling humidity mold and mildew will thrive, give off odors, and ruin your home's structure along with your possessions and furniture. SERVPRO of Madison technicians are skilled at protecting against the growth of mold and mildew and have effective strategies to combat it.
At SERVPRO of Madison, we know how important it is to get your home back in order as quickly as possible. We'll help you mitigate the costs of any water emergency by restoring your possessions and preventing future damage to your home. Unexpected Mold Locations
5/2/2017 (Permalink)
Mold hiding in your home
Where Does Mold Hide?
Think your home is pristine? There is no way mold can be infesting your sanctuary, right? You may need to reevaluate your thinking. Mold may be hiding within your residence. Mold problems can occur anywhere if conditions are ideal for growth, and some portions of your home may be home to mold, as well. You may try to maintain a clean environment, constantly dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, organizing, and doing a thorough cleaning of your property, but you may have missed a spot…or a few. There may be some parts of your home you do not consider, and you are not alone in making this mistake.
Kitchen
The kitchen is a location that may have moisture issues which can contribute to mold growth.
- Check under your sink. A small pipe leak may go unnoticed, letting the moisture and water damage sit untreated. Leaks combined with dark spaces are the perfect environment for mold.
- The sponge dish may have a mold problem. You use your sponge to wash dishes every day, but when you put it back in its dish, moisture may begin to collect and mold begin to form.
- Under your fridge isn’t safe either. Yes, even your refrigerator may have moisture issues. The refrigerator can leak without you knowing. There is a drip pan under your refrigerator that can collect excess water, but if left untreated, mold can form.
Laundry
Your washing machine may be a hot spot for mold. Check the door of the washing machine, inside the gasket. Dark, warm, moist areas are ideal for mold growth. Make sure to wipe under the door gasket after each wash to prevent mold growth. Also leave the door open to air-out the washing machine.
Bathroom
Your shower or tub may be hiding mold without your knowledge.
- Check under lids and bottoms of shower products. You may forget to pick these products up and clean underneath. Moisture can become trapped under the lids or under the products and mold can form.
- Bath toys may be fun for kids, but they may also be housing mold. Water may get inside the toys and be unable to get out. This is a difficult location to discover mold. You may need to open up one of the toys to see if mold is growing inside, and if there is mold, replace all of the toys, as there most-likely will be mold within them as well.
Mold does not discriminate and may develop in any property as long as ideal conditions are met. Mold can cause health issues with excess exposure, so it is important to remove any mold you discover. If you suspect mold may be in your property, contact SERVPRO of Madison (608) 221-1818. Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building. This is a fallacy. Mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and HVAC systems. Consider these facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Does Your Commercial or Residential Property Have A Mold Problem?

In City of Madison, mold can spread through a property in as little as 48 hours.

Different Classes of Water Damage
4/14/2017 (Permalink)
Like it never even happened.
Classes of Water Damage
Classes of Water Damage losses are determined by the rate of evaporation based on the type of materials affected by water damage to your property. Determining the Class of Water is an important first step, and will determine the amount and type of equipment utilized to restore your business. There are four IICRC water damage classifications, they are as follows:

City of Madison Smoke and Soot Cleanup
8/17/2016 (Permalink)
Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your City of Madison Home.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of MADISON will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

Mold— it comes in almost every color and it is pesky, to say the least. It is typically caused by bacteria combined with the hot, humid environment that our bathrooms provide, especially post-shower or bath. However, there are a few quick, cheap, and effective tips you can use to help get rid of bathroom mold and prevent it from coming back.
- After showering, turn on an exhaust fan or open a window. Humidity provides the perfect breading ground for bacteria so good ventilation is key to removing moisture from the air.
- If humidity is still a concern: put charcoal briquettes in a bowl or basket and place it in the bathroom. The charcoal absorbs some of the moisture. Just keep it out of reach of children and pets.
keep a spray bottle nearby and quickly mist the tiles and caulking after your shower with this natural anti-mold solution that takes no effort to make. Fill a clean spray bottle with water. Add 10 drops of tea tree oil to the mix. Place the spray bottle on the 'mist' setting. It takes about four seconds to spray the tiles and then you walk away. Now you are protected from mold. These ingredients are cheap, easy to find and are highly effective.

Pet Fire Safety Tips to Keep Pets From House Fires:
- Extnguish Open Flames- Pets are generally curious and will investiagate cooking appliances, candles or even a fire in your fireplace
- Pet Proof the Home- Take a walk around your home and look for areas where pets might start fires inadvertently, such as the stove knobs, loose wires and other potential hazards
- Secure Young Pets- Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home.
- Keep Pets Near Entrances- When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.
- Since Pets Left Alone Can't Escape a Burning Home- Use monitored smoke detectors which are connected to a monitoring center, providing an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms.
- Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling- Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information sanves rescuers time when locating your pets. You can obtain a free window cling by going to www.adt.com/pets.

First Day of Summer
6/22/2016 (Permalink)
The first day of summer.
