This Beaver Dam home started on fire when a lightning bolt struck the peak of the house. Firefighters extinguished the fire and SERVPRO of Madison, WI was called to handle the fire and water mitigation.  Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

Our trained professionals carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

SERVPRO of Madison North and East has specialized fire and water damage restoration training and experience to quickly clean up and restore your home to pre-fire condition. What to do after a fire:

  • Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.

Safely Enjoying your Summer

8/8/2017 (Permalink)

There are many great things that come along with the great thrill of summer like swimming, many outdoor activities, but most importantly cook outs and campfires. Using the grill and campfires are huge instigators for house fires. Here are some safety tips on preventing this...

Grilling Safety Tips:

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outside.
  • The grill should be placed several feet away from the home, deck railings and out from under leaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep caution of children and pets around the grilling area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Always make sure your gas grill's lid is open before lighting it.

For charcoal grills...

  • There are many ways to get charcoal ready for use. Chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
  • If using starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Campfire Safety tips:

  • You should keep your fire 8 to 10 feet away from anything such as your house, chairs, food, etc.
  • Have water nearby. Controlling a fire can be just as important as putting it out.
  • Safety proof your pit:
  1. Clear all debris from around the pit like garbage and grass. A 5-foot perimeter of soil around the campfire space is recommended.
  2. If there isn't a metal ring, circle the pit with rocks or stones. It will help keep the fire in it's borders.

SERVPRO hopes everyone has a great summer! Remember to call SERVPRO at 608-221-1818 if an accident happens.

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage.
